ACORRN Strategic Plan
ACORRN has a clear remit over the next few years, aiming to reinforce our successes in line with our charitable objects. We will promote and support the development and implementation of state-of-the-art radiotherapy techniques across the UK, backed by a network of collaborative and supportive biology to help individualise treatment – improving patient care and reducing side effects.
Over the next 5 years, ACORRN plans to undertake a large fundraising initiative to help build a high quality and dynamic radiotherapy and radiobiology research platform via (for example):
- Providing research training bursaries or fellowships to clinicians, radiobiologists, radiographers, nurses and physicists to develop academic critical mass in radiotherapy and radiobiology research. Such individuals would complete research degrees and display commitment to pursuing a research career.
- Providing infrastructure to support radiotherapy research in clinical centres.
Helping to develop guidelines to facilitate the safe and effective introduction of new radiotherapy technologies, techniques and combination therapies. - In partnership with stakeholder organisations, helping to develop dissemination, implementation and evaluation strategies for the safe and effective roll out of new radiotherapy technologies and techniques.
- Providing larger scale research grants to UK radiotherapy and radiobiology investigators to support new developments and facilitate translation of these into clinical practice.
- Lobby national funding bodies and the Department of Health to prioritise radiotherapy and radiobiology research and the rapid, effective implementation of new discoveries into clinical practice.
- Working with patients, carers and clinical practitioners to identify areas of unmet clinical need and fostering research programmes to address these.
